Brews, beats and banter at Palmy’s Brew Union Brewing Company

With a resident DJ, house brewed beers on tap, woodfired pizzas and unique open spaced dining, it’s not surprising that Brew Union Brewing Company took home the OneMusic Outstanding Ambience & Design this year at Manawatu’s Restaurant Association Hospitality Awards.

Director, Jules Grace spoke with OneMusic about the Palmerston North establishment that has been serving guests house brewed pints, elevated pub grub and music royalty since 2017.

We’re super proud of the space we’ve created at Brew Union. It has a unique culture that we think has really catapulted Palmerston North's social scene to be currently trending in the now

Jules paints a picture of the impressive spot – a 70-meter-long building with a brewery, restaurant, and airy outdoor area that emphasises the natural bones of the industrial space that was once an old ice cream factory.

“Being open plan, the space is light and airy with plenty of space to dine, dance and drink with friends. We knew we wanted to lean into the true foundations of the space, highlighting the feel of exposed brick, local timber and steel to give at that feeling of a truly elevated brewhouse.”

DJ DFresh at Brew Union

Speaking on their OneMusic award, Jules says music has always been an essential part of their vision for Brew Union. Their OneMusic licence allows them to hero their resident DJ, Damian “DFresh” McGregor – the man behind the music who has spent the past five and a half years spinning decks at Brew Union.

Each Friday night, “DFresh” showcases some of the best recorded music produced from the past century and says it continues to be absolute joy and pleasure to do so.

Heralding the use of quality vinyl records, Damian says that having no limitations of era or genre of music creates a rich musical atmosphere that brings Brew Union to life.

Our patrons love to interact and connect over the artists, albums and songs of their youth right through to acclaimed recent releases… there’s something for everyone offered over the Friday DJ set.

Damien and Jules agree Brew Union’s vision for the space has allowed it to become Palmy's space of uncharted sensory experiences and a stage of new introductions.

The offering knows no bounds, be it the numerous craft beers and gins on offer, the food menu and of course the classic to contemporary quality music. Brew Union isn’t afraid to say “come get some."

Brew Union is located on 41 Broadway Ave in Palmerston North. Head there on a Friday and you’ll catch DFresh live on the decks with some great beats and banter.
