What We Heard
Over an eight-week consultation period, we received nineteen written responses from individual Dance Schools and Instructors, as well as a group submission from Dance Aotearoa New Zealand (DANZ). The feedback covered a wide range of views and suggestions, all of which were carefully considered.
What’s Changing
After reviewing all submissions, OneMusic will implement a revised Dance Schools and Instructors Music Licence effective from 1 February 2026. Here’s a summary of the key changes:
- Music in Dance Classes
Annual fees for background music will be calculated based on the average weekly number of classes across all locations. In response to feedback, the class‑number tiers have been adjusted and expanded to better reflect usage at different scales. For clarity, background music fees will be calculated based on average classes across all locations. If a licence to copy music for use during classes (‘Digital Delivery’) is required, this will still be calculated per location/premise. - Website Use Included
Rights to use music on dance school or instructor websites will now be covered at no extra charge under the Music in Dance Classes category. - Events Covered in One Licence
Music used in Dance School Events is now included in the licence under four tiers, replacing separate APRA and Recorded Music NZ event licences. A Dance School Event includes school-led showcases or recitals where the entry fee is under $35 (excluding ballets and performances in Dramatic Context). - Domestic Use Video
The existing Annual and Single-Use Domestic Use Video licences are consolidated into this revised licence package (with rates and structures unchanged) to simplify administration.
What Does This Mean for You?
- New and existing customers will be able to sign up for the revised licence from 1 February 2026.
- Existing Dance Instruction licence holders can choose to remain on their current licence or switch to the new Dance Schools and Instructors Music Licence. OneMusic will contact all customers ahead of their annual renewal date to discuss this option and guide you through the process.
